THE SECTOR: ECONOMIC CONTRIBUTION
Local tobacco farms are important contributors to the South African agricultural sector.
ECONOMIC CONTRIBUTION
Tobacco leaf production is one of the biggest contributors to South Africa’s fiscus. Our members pay approximately R13 billion in taxes to the State every year.
The tobacco value chain is a very important source of income for many families and communities in South Africa.
Our tobacco leaf farms provide jobs and stable income to almost 7 000 farmers, 400-600 people in the processing industry and 3,354 people in the manufacturing sector. Tobacco leaf production provides stability and relative profitability compared to other agricultural commodities in South Africa. It supports on average 1.5 – 2 jobs for every hectare of tobacco produced.
